ASIDE from his adoration of greyhounds, one of the late Maurie Gray’s “pride and joys” was his 1976 Holden HZ Premier Kingswood station wagon.

Residents would often witness the “golden flash” around the streets of Muswellbrook, filled to the brim with the market gardener’s latest crop of locally-grown food.
Unfortunately, Mr Gray died at the age of 80 last year after suffering heart and kidney complications following a brief illness.
But, in an unusual twist, his prized possession is now providing transport and enjoyment to a number of classic Holden enthusiasts, thanks to Auto Pro’s John Daniel.
“Bought new in Muswellbrook, by the Grays, the 1976 Holden HZ Premier Kingswood station wagon was a car to be proud of,” he said.
“However, over the past 40 years, it’s gone from a flash family vehicle to a transporter of produce to the market and, finally, a farm run-around.
“Instead of having the indignity of being scrapped, its motor, transmission, differential, RTS stabilizer bars, radiator, power steering, day-night mirror and rims are now fitted to a HQ Holden [station wagon], towing a vintage caravan on many adventures.
“Its seats and console will be refurbished and fitted into a local fully-restored EH Holden sedan, while the air-conditioner will help make an LH Torana more comfortable.
“The radio and twin horns are in a HJ Kingswood sedan, the window rollers and bits were placed in a HQ 350 Monaro, and the front bumper is on a HJ Monaro.
“The towbar has been fitted to a HJ Kingswood wagon and some strips will be installed in a HX sedan.
“So, I guess the legacy of Maurie’s vehicle remains.”
Mr Gray’s wife, Katherine, said she was heartened to hear what Mr Daniel did.
“The car was extremely popular,” she explained.
“Everyone asked me about it after Maurie died.
“So, it’s great to know the Holden HZ has been put to good use.
“I would hate to have seen it go to a scrap heap.
“At least it’s still running around.
“I love what John did – he even presented me with a memento, which I’ll cherish.”
