Spokesperson Julie Smith said a small group of people worked together to get them out of the creek and into containers of water and eventually into the Hunter River.
“They’re not native but I won’t stand by and watch an animal die,” she explained.
Washing away the stench of mud, slime and dead eel off their clothes and skin is an entirely different matter.
“We could feel eels under our feet in the mud and my daughter got stuck in the mud at one point,” Mrs Smith said.
“There’s another small pool of water along the creek we’ll be keeping an eye on.”
