But, Ty Turnbull is going to grab the opportunity with both hands when the tournament starts at the East Cessnock Bowling Club on Friday, April 20.
The local sportsman will face Nelson Bay’s Alvin Gardiner in a round two encounter.
And, victory there could propel him into a showdown with Commonwealth Games gold medallist, and 2016 World Junior Champion, Aaron Wilson of Cabramatta.
“He’s in my section – and I’m looking forward to it,” Turnbull said.
“If I get the chance, I’ll pick his brains [if I don’t play him].
“It’s the first time I’ve been accepted into the event.
“So, I know it’s going to be a tough day.
“I’ll need to win the section to make it through to the next level at Tweed Heads.
“However, I’m keen to push myself as far as I can in elite company.
“On top of competitions, I practice three times a week – so, I’m always on a bowling green.”
Turnbull admits he won’t leave much in the tank either.
“I’ve been bowling really well lately,” he said.
“I have made two district finals and a semi-final, so my confidence is high at the moment.
“And, I played Denman’s Allan Sutton in a district singles match at the weekend.
“The Australian Open Indoor Singles Championships will certainly be an experience, especially to see if I can match it with the best.
“The Muswellbrook RSL Bowling Club has chipped in to pay my way, too – and I’m really appreciative of the gesture.
“With our pennant season starting against Scone [Bowling Club] on April 28, hopefully I can help the team do well in that.”
The finals of the Australian Open Indoor Singles Championships will be played from August 20 to 23.
