Thanks to the successful CASP (County Arts Support Program) Regional Arts NSW grant application, Upper Hunter Community Services collaborated with local Aboriginal community members Richie and Sue Lawton to host a free two-day Aboriginal Cultural Program at Hunter Park Family Centre (HPFC).
The Ridgy Didge Cultural Program, held in the first week of the April school holidays, enjoyed a fantastic response from the community.
During the interactive, hands-on workshop, community members painted their hands onto paper, painted a didgeridoo, played the instrument, learned how the didgeridoo was carved, decorated cupcakes with indigenous art toppers and planted Aboriginal “tucker”.
Richie got out with the locals and played a bit of Aussie cricket as residents were treated to fried scones for morning tea and a barbecue lunch.
Meanwhile, the kids especially enjoyed trying a kangaroo sausage.
The highlight for the children, however, was playing the didgeridoo as Richie had groups captivated to the sound of this Aboriginal traditional instrument.
Aboriginal Family Worker Leanne Walklate and Muswellbrook Neighbourhood Services coordinator Skye Bennett, who applied for the grant, were happy with the result of the two days.
They thought it would benefit the community to run similar workshops in upcoming school holidays.
“I was amazed that families travelled as far as Singleton, Gundy and Wingen to attend,” Mrs Walklate said.
“It’s a great turnout.”
Neighbourhood Centre Week
UPPER Hunter Community Services will conduct a morning tea at Hunter Park Family Centre (HPFC) on Thursday, May 3, between 10.30am and noon to celebrate YOU.
We invite you to come along, have a look at the newly-renovated HPFC as staff chat about what YOU would like to happen at the centre.
Annual Picnic in the Park
UPPER Hunter Community Services is busy organising the annual Picnic in the Park event, held in conjunction with Families Week and Simultaneous Storytime on May 23 at Simpson Park, Muswellbrook.
Residents can watch, and listen to, our local schools and pre-schools perform.
There’ll also be three performances from “Reptiles Rule” where you can get close to your favourite reptiles.
