A special ceremony for the elderly took place at the aged care facility on Monday, with members from the Muswellbrook RSL Sub-Branch, Hunter Valley Police District representatives and a number of locals in attendance, too.
The occasion also had extra meaning for Joan Budden and June Hampson, who were invited to participate in the wreath-laying ritual.
“It’s something we used to do at Mount Providence,” Muswellbrook RSL Sub-Branch president Greg Cole said.
“But, this year, we hosted a service at Calvary.
“I’m sure the residents appreciated it.
“Last week we conducted our annual Anzac Field of Remembrance Service with the ladies from the Muswellbrook War Widows’ Guild Social Club.”
Everything is now geared up for Anzac Day – in both Muswellbrook and Denman – on Wednesday.
The Dawn Service is scheduled at the Muswellbrook Cenotaph from 6am.
The march, along Bridge Street, gets underway at 10am, to be followed by a commemorative observance – also at the cenotaph.
“We’re looking forward to the day; and there’s been a lot of interest in it [Anzac Day], ever since the centenary anniversary and the involvement of school children,” Mr Cole said.
“Plus, I think the fantastic Beersheba acknowledgement [in 2017] has increased attention again.
“Our guest speaker in 2018 is Navy Warrant Officer John Menhenick.
“We’re hoping to have the Light Horsemen involved this year, too, along with a flyover during the ceremony.”
Meanwhile, in Denman, the Dawn Service will start from 6am at Memorial Park.
An Anzac Day Church ceremony then takes place at St Bernard’s Catholic Church, Paxton Street, at 11am to be followed by a march from the church to Memorial Park.
The commemorative service begins from noon.
