And, in 2018, the local business is pinning its hopes on young mechanic Liam Ryan, who’s a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category.
“It’s awesome for him to make it through to the final four,” owner Zack Bennett said.
“It is a big honour, just being nominated, and going up against the best apprentices in the area.
“But, Liam’s done a fantastic trade.
“We wish him all the best.
“He’s now in his fourth year at Muswellbrook Automotive Services.
“So, I think it’s huge he’s come this far.
“Liam will have his interview next week; with the winner announced after that.”
Muswellbrook Automotive Services has enjoyed success on three occasions in the history of the awards.
“We’ve got a good record in the [Apprentice of the Year] category,” Mr Bennett said.
“Dennis Gallen picked it up in 2009, Ben McLean grabbed the prize in 2013 and Alex Smith claimed the spoils in 2016.
“So, Liam’s a good chance, too.”
The prestigious event is conducted annually through the Hunter Regional Apprenticeship and Traineeship Advisory Committee (HRATA) – with the winners progressing on to state level and, in some cases, nationally.
And, with the growing importance of vocational training in enhancing the region’s prosperity, the awards play a critical role in the economic landscape by encouraging and celebrating excellence in skills development, including metals and engineering, automotive, carpentry, building and construction, hairdressing, electrical, commercial cookery, childcare, drafting, business studies and more.
The 2018 Regional Training Awards will take place at NEX – Newcastle Exhibition & Convention Centre on Friday, June 22.
