The event was hosted by Upper Hunter Community Services (UHCS) and featured plenty of entertainment including performances, Crush the Crocodile from Reptiles Rock, and at precisely 11am, local radio presenter Nix Ainley read Hickory Dickory Dash as part of National Simultaneous Story (NSS) time.
NSS is an annual campaign in its 18th year that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books, promoting the value of reading and literacy.
Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country – and this year places like Simpson Park.
UHCS staff estimated about 500 people attended the picnic including children from many of the local primary schools, pre-schools and daycare centres.
Among other acts, Goodstart Pre-school students performed The Wombat Wobble, St James’ choir performed, bringing along their ukuleles and the firies had the trucks open for inspection.
UHCS staff also took the opportunity to link families with local services.
