In November, NSW Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton announced the inaugural beneficiaries to feature on the state’s reverse vending machines (RVMs).
“People returning eligible containers will be able to donate their refunds to charity partners, the Cancer Council, St Vincent de Paul, Surf Life Saving NSW & Planet Ark,” she explained.
“They make incredible contributions to communities across the state, giving people an option to hand over their refunds to these organisations as well as a local community charity or not-for-profit organisation.”
Now, the Muswellbrook Men’s Shed is proud to announce that Tomra, NSW Government Return & Earn Scheme and Exchange for Change have endorsed the group as a donation charity partner for the RVM located on Sydney Street, with further consideration currently being assessed for the new machine being installed at the Muswellbrook Marketplace car park.
“To donate a refund to the Muswellbrook Men’s Shed, residents will need to insert an eligible drink container into the RVMs and select the ‘donate’ option and choose the Muswellbrook Men’s Shed,” management consultant Dave Sorensen said.
“Where relevant donations of $2 or more are made, customers will be issued with a receipt to claim a tax deduction.
“Containers should be empty, uncrushed and have the original barcode label attached to receive the 10 cent refund.
“The volunteer members of the Muswellbrook Men’s Shed are pleased that they have been recognised as a donation partner for the local community.
“Some 888,000 containers have been returned to the RVM on Sydney Street since its installation.”
The Muswellbrook Men’s Shed continues to run its sustainable futures program by accepting donations of eligible containers at their facility, where the volunteers package and sort them before shipping them direct to a contractor for the Return and Earn Scheme.
This greatly assists their fundraising efforts, as well as reduce landfill, an issue the men’s shed is passionate about.
The CDS, which is funded entirely by the beverage industry, is modelled on similar schemes in South Australia, the Northern Territory and many other countries around the world,” scheme coordinator Exchange for Change CEO Peter Bruce said.
“Return & Earn has been embraced by consumers and the community, with its popularity increasing every week.”
“We kindly thank all those members of our community for donating their refund to our organisation,” Mr Sorensen added.
“It greatly helps us improve our facility, community initiatives and programs, in particular improving local men’s health, which is our main charter.”
