The Muswellbrook Rams will host the second annual Group 21 Junior Rugby League Where there’s a Will (WTAW) round on Saturday, with hundreds of youngsters hitting the playing paddock to support the Upper Hunter not-for-profit organisation.
The occasion, which also features a cake stall, rainbow-coloured hair spray, a jellybean guessing competition and WTAW merchandise tent, is a chance for the local club to honour one of its own, too.
The junior Rams will retire all their number 1 jerseys for the round as a mark of respect to Jye Taylor.
“It’s a massive weekend ahead for WTAW,” founder Pauline Carrigan said.
“And, it is amazing to see Muswellbrook paying tribute to Jye [in that way].
“Many will remember the outstanding success of last year’s inaugural WTAW round in Scone – and we’re just thrilled that it’s all happening again.
“More and more, it is becoming a whole Upper Hunter event.
“So, it’s wonderful it’s taking place in Muswellbrook this time.
“We don’t want people to think it will always be based at Scone.
“The day raised approximately $16,000 in 2017.
“But, we’re not expecting as much this time as most kids will already have the specially-designed socks.
“This is more about continuing the awareness of mental health and wellbeing.
“We want to create a little bit of familiarity around WTAW – and trying to normalise the conversation for children.”
Mrs Carrigan said the WTAW committee members were thrilled to see their socks spreading far and wide.
“They’ve been spotted on netball courts, hockey fields, at rugby games, cricket matches – and even walking down the main streets of our towns,” she explained.
“Thanks to all who are making it happen.
“It is just so inspiring to see the way this community is rising to the challenge of improving mental health and wellbeing in the Upper Hunter.”
If you can’t make it to Muswellbrook to buy a pair of socks, phone Marie Wickman on 0413 093 237 and she’ll organise to get some to you.
