MUSWELLBROOK Shire Council is seeking community feedback on a proposed half day public holiday (from noon onward) for the Muswellbrook Cup next year.

Council is also keen to hear views on whether the Muswellbrook Cup should be a half day public holiday (from noon onward), a part day public holiday (from noon to 6pm only) or merely a local event day on Friday, March 29, 2019.

A “local event day” is recognised as a day of special significance to the community in name only and does not attract entitlement to paid leave or penalty rates unless specified in the form of an enterprise agreement or by contract.

The race carnival has been moved from its former spring date to reinvigorate Muswellbrook Cup Day and establish a progressive and exciting autumn festival.

While there will not be a Muswellbrook Cup in 2018, the race club will host a meeting at Skellatar Park on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday, November 6.

Sponsored by Muswellbrook Shire Council and Muswellbrook Coal Company, this will be the ideal place in the Hunter Valley to enjoy country racing and watch the “race that stops the nation”, the 2018 Melbourne Cup, on the big screen.

Council will consult with the community, local businesses, schools, banks and the Muswellbrook Race Club before applying to the Minister of Industrial Relations for either a half day or part day public holiday or local event day.
