During the official launch of Lionel Ahearn and Bill Spicer’s latest book, Standing the Test of Time, the organisation took the opportunity to bestow Life Membership upon popular members Helen Ellis and Bruce James.
Fittingly, both of the long-serving stalwarts are former presidents of the group, who still provide valuable contributions to the society – and the community.
While shocked by the announcement, the pair happily accepted the framed certificates from Mr Ahearn at the Muswellbrook Library function.
“I’m very honoured,” Mrs Ellis said.
“I love my membership, as much as I love my town.
“My time with the society has been, and is, very rewarding.
“They are a terrific bunch of people.”
Mr James, who also helped the co-authors with Standing the Test of Time, was equally humble.
“I’m normally not short of a word, but this is totally unexpected,” he admitted.
“For me, it’s definitely a labour of love.
“This [certificate] will take pride of place in my lounge room.”
It caps off a busy few months for the Muswellbrook Shire Local & Family History Society Inc.
Although the organisation was founded on June 11, 1958, it celebrated its 60th anniversary at a special luncheon in July.
The Muswellbrook Shire Local & Family History Society Inc opens from 9.30am until 12.30pm, every Saturday, in its room at the back of the Muswellbrook Library for research.
