Hosted annually towards the latter half of each year, the event is exclusive to artists from the Muswellbrook, Singleton and Upper Hunter LGAs (local government areas).
Past prize winners have been a mix of local well-known artists, undiscovered talent and first-timers, who often go on to become regular entrants in the awards.
The sections highlight the breadth and depth of artistic talent in the Upper Hunter and are supported by, and in honour of, the contributions of local artists and supporting businesses: Esther Bellis, Viola Bromley, Garry Philp, Max Watters OAM, along with Berry & French Pharmacy, Elks Enterprises, Framing Good, Hunter Valley Hydraulink, Hunter Valley Printing and Morgan + English Commercial Lawyers - sponsors of the inaugural People’s Choice Prize.
“The visiting public has been calling for a People’s Choice Prize to be included in the awards,” public programs officer Elissa Emerson said.
“The arts centre has answered this call, supported by Morgan + English Commercial Lawyers who have generously sponsored a People’s Choice first, second and encouragement prize with values matching the other sections.
“The inclusion of Morgan + English as a sponsor of the awards now means the sponsors, like the artists themselves, come from across the three shires.”
This year’s adjudicator is Lisa Kirkpatrick, the collection and exhibitions officer at Newcastle Gallery.
Entries close on October 5, with artworks to be delivered to the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre by October 19.
With such a variety of art forms in competition for a prize pool of now $7000, the Muswellbrook Local Art Awards are a drawcard for steadfast loyal locals, who make it a successful and popular art event each year.
