UPPER Hunter women gathered in Muswellbrook at the weekend to have a good time – and generate donations for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).

The eighth annual Girls Night Out was both an educational and enjoyable experience for all involved, as event-goers were treated to music and dancing as well as speeches from health experts.
They were spoken to about the importance of regular check-ups and early detection by Brook Medical’s Dr Clifton Washaya, before Rachel Murphy from NBCF told them how crucial the money raised would be and what they could accomplish with it.
More than 150 women converged on the Muswellbrook RSL Club on Saturday night and organiser Karen Egan said it was a huge success.
“This was our first Saturday, our numbers were still fantastic and we’ve had great numbers for every event,” she admitted.
They raised in excess of $17,000 on the night through raffles, tickets and a variety of other activities, which was a great return and will go a long way for the NBCF, according to Mrs Egan.
“The money that we raise goes into research, as they don’t have any government funding,” she said.
“The only way they have money to keep researchers in the lab is through events like ours.”
She also thanked all of the sponsors who helped with the night, and said they were a crucial part of the fundraiser.
Girls Night Out is sure to continue into the future, and will be looking to build on the funding they’ve generated in their eight years so far, which has been more than $100,000.
