And, following many years of hard work helping others, the members’ selfless dedication was officially acknowledged last week.
Upper Hunter MP Michael Johnsen presented the volunteers with a Parliament of NSW Community Recognition Citation.
He also made a parliamentary Private Member’s Statement in the NSW House of Representatives recently, putting on record in Hansards the excellent work the Muswellbrook Men's Shed does in the local shire.
“Apart from raising money for drought relief, the organisation plays a vital role in the community providing a safe, friendly and inclusive environment where males gather to work on projects at their own pace, share skills and knowledge to others,” Mr Johnsen said.
“So, it was with great pleasure that I once again met with the Muswellbrook members to present them with a Private Member’s Statement that I delivered at Parliament House.
“On that occasion, I outlined the wonderful work the men’s shed is achieving in the community and district.
“I was also able to present them with the fantastic news that I was successful in obtaining $5000 in grant funding from the NSW Government, Minister for Ageing and Mental Health Tanya Davies, to assist with their Men’s Shed Health Expo & Community Open Day, which will take place on Saturday, November 10.
“This day is a great initiative for men of all ages to participate in health checks, listen to guest speakers, see shed displays and enjoy entertainment.”
Muswellbrook Men’s Shed executive secretary Dave Sorensen was delighted with the acknowledgement.
“The shed and all its volunteer members are very proud, honoured and humbled to receive such an important award and public recognition,” he said.
“It further supports the dedication our shed has to the local community and, in particular, men's health awareness, particularly in isolated rural areas where resources are very limited.
“In addition, Mr Johnson kindly made a donation of a one-off grant of $5000 to go towards the shed men's health programs and our Community Open Day.
“We can showcase what we do at the shed and the interaction we have with other community-based organisations.
“Our shed receives very little sometime, if any, local, state or federal funding.
“This $5000 grant is very much appreciated from Mr Johnson and the NSW Government – and will be put to great use.”
Members of the Muswellbrook Men's Shed management team, president Brian White, vice-president/shed manager Dennis Matthews, secretary/consultant Dave Sorensen, treasurer Mick Jones and committee members Jason Lambley, Jordy Manton and Lindsay Lambley also received individual citations for their hard work and dedication to managing the shed, its progress, project and initiatives.
