On Wednesday, Muswellbrook High School students will participate in activities at council’s Sustainability Hub, including discussions on recycling and diverting waste from landfill.
During the week, council will also promote a number of educational materials to help community members identify what can be recycled.
“Acceptable Recyclables” is an A to Z list of materials that can go into the recycling bin and the “Recycling Near You Golden Rules” outline six rules to assist with recycling.
Council will also use the week to promote the importance of purchasing items made from recyclable materials.
After a recent decision to purchase 100 per cent post-consumer recycled office paper, they hope to encourage other businesses and locals to make similar purchases.
“Recycling does have great economic and environmental benefits,” council’s sustainability officer Mick Brady said.
“But, it only works if we recycle correctly and buy things made from recycled materials.”
Currently every tonne of waste that goes into landfill requires the council to pay $70 per tonne to the NSW EPA as part of the waste levy.
Therefore everything that gets diverted from landfill by recycling is a saving for council.
