SCHOOL is almost done for the year, but that doesn’t mean kids should be switching their brains off and going square-eyed during the day just yet.

Luckily, the Muswellbrook Library is coming to the rescue with their new and improved Summer Reading Program (SRP), which has now become part of a wider network across the Upper Hunter.
With fun activities to take part in and prizes to be won, the SRP offers a lot more than just sitting down in front of an iPad or PlayStation 4 playing Candy Crush and Fortnite all day.
Petting zoos and Lego quest challenges are just two of many fun interactive exercises that will be offered, and the Readopoly game is always a way to get children involved.
Library coordinator Dion Hockley spoke highly of the program and spruiked its educational benefits.
“It’s a good opportunity just to keep reading and continue literacy throughout the holidays,” she said.
“And, obviously, there’s the social aspect as well, which is why we have so many different activities for kids to come in and play and learn and make new friends.
“People do like to look outside of the [school] curriculum so they can read anything that interests them which is a really nice thing.
“So, they have the opportunity to catch up on something they’ve heard about during the year now they have time to themselves – and just chill out.”
SRP is spread across the region with activities in Muswellbrook, Scone, Denman, Cassilis, Murrurundi and Merriwa, meaning children all across the Upper Hunter will have the opportunity to take part.
Registration is now open and participation can be organised through your local library.
