SPECULATION that BHP is buying motels throughout Muswellbrook to house out-of-town employees is simply “untrue” and “scuttlebutt”.

The Chronicle received calls late last week stating the mining company had purchased The John Hunter Motel in Maitland Street.
CFMEU Mining and Energy Northern District president Peter Jordan admitted he had heard the rumours, too.
“Yes, we’ve been contacted in regards to that situation,” he said.
“If it’s correct, it’s a bit of a worry.”
But, a BHP spokesman said all the talk was just that – talk.
“I can [categorically] deny that we’ve bought the The John Hunter or any other motel in Muswellbrook,” he explained.
The company also responded to claims that local “casuals” were being overlooked for full-time roles.
Before Christmas, BHP unveiled a new organisation within its ranks to accelerate productivity improvements and reduce its use of labour hire workers.
“Anyone can apply for the jobs with Operations Services at Mt Arthur Coal,” the spokesperson said.
“We are running a transparent, merit-based recruitment process and we expect to source a number of employees from the local area.
“We have been working with the Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce and Industry to encourage people who live locally to apply for the roles that are now being advertised.”
Applications can be made via the BHP website at http://www.bhp.com/os
“Following feedback from people at site that they require more time to submit their applications given the window was over Christmas - New Year, we have in fact extended the application period until January 21,” he said.
