But, ultimately, it was bullrider Kade Attenborough who took home the title.
The 14-year-old bucked off strong competition as a result of his outstanding 2018, which saw him compete in the world high school bullriding finals in South Dakota, USA.
It was not the first time he had ventured overseas to compete and it’s unlikely to be the last, given the sheer amount of silverware he has picked up in his short career so far.
Kade revealed that attending the world title in America was his favourite moment of 2018, but there were a number of options to choose from including his performance at the national championships in Australia.
His father, Mat Attenborough, is extremely proud of his son and believes this latest achievement could mean a lot for his future.
“I’m really excited for him,” he said.
“That’s the sort of award that he can keep and can go on his CV when he’s older and will be known around the area.”
In the immediate though, Kade is focusing on trying to make it back to South Dakota in June.
The youngster said he’s keen to return overseas if the opportunity arises, even though he’ll be without his dad for several weeks.
“I’m looking forward to the world championship… it’ll be alright because I’ve got some mates over there that I’ll be with,” he said.
With the finals scheduled for August, it’s set to be a long and hard six months for the teenager who will undoubtedly be busy with his school and sports commitments.
But, as always, it’s a frantic time for the parents, too, which is why his father is so thankful for the local sponsors such as the Denman Hotel and itravel who have helped the family throughout his son’s career.
While his reputation continues to grow throughout the Upper Hunter, Kade is well aware of who has supported him the most, thanking his mum and dad for allowing him to pursue his passion.
