Following a few seasons with neighbouring Muswellbrook Rams, Adam Grech will step into the captain-coach’s shoes – for the first time in his career.
And, he’s looking forward to plying his new-found trade at his old stomping ground.
“I spent eight years at the Devils and won the 2013 grand final (20-4 against Greta Branxton), as well as the 2015 decider (24-20 against Scone Thoroughbreds in the longest recorded match in history) with the boys,” Grech said.
“So, I know the club fairly well.
“Everyone is laidback here and very welcoming.
“It’s good to be ‘home’.”
After “missing the boat” for the coaching gig at the Rams, Grech jumped at the opportunity to mentor Denman’s promising youngsters.
“I guess I wanted a change, too – and get outside my comfort zone,” he said.
“The Devils committee approached me, so I thought ‘why not?’
“It’s also a chance to challenge myself a bit.
“Now, I’m hopeful of bringing a good vibe around the club.
“Our goal is, obviously, a semi-final berth.
“If we can make top four – or upwards, I’ll be over the moon.
“Denman hasn’t played finals for a few years.
“It’d be nice to change that.”
Joining Grech at the Devils are ex-Rams Brady Benkovic, Jordan Mulherin, Andrew Pritchard and Reinhard Lategan, along with Luke and Dan Rees from Singleton.
“I’m still talking to players,” he said.
“Plus, we’ve got the likes of Isaac McCormick, Andrew Nicholls and a host of talented juniors, so we’re not in a bad shape at all.
“I’ll admit, a lack of depth has been a problem for Denman in the past.
“But, I’m hoping to get some more locals on deck again.
“So, I don’t think it’ll be an issue.
“We’ll field a pretty handy forward pack.
“It’s just a matter of putting together a strong spine (in the fullback, five-eighth, halfback and hooker positions).
“We’ve already organised a trial match against [former Devils captain-coach] Dean Amos’ side at Denman on March 16.
“However, the Group 21 clash against Muswellbrook in round five should be an interesting hit-out.”
The Devils’ coaching staff includes Ilisa Cama (reserve grade), Peter Ball (under-18s), Tammy Johns and Tony Graham (league tag).
If you’re interested in joining the club, head to Denman Oval on a Tuesday or Thursday from 6pm.
