The Jan Bowen-trained gelding son of Roman Emperor surged to a three-length win from wayward The Mont (Cody Morgan) in the TAB.com.au Benchmark 58 Handicap (1000m).
Quick Nick (Paul Perry) was a length and a half away third in a 56.20 seconds sprint.
The Mont, ridden by apprentice Reece Jones, appeared to have the race at his mercy but the Tamworth gelding ran off at the turn presenting Ryan a saloon passage for Roman Typhoon.
Ryan said the gelding couldn’t “go early”.
“He hasn’t been finishing his races off but the pace was on today,” he added.
That allowed him a “good, even run” with Roman Typhoon as they clocked 34.24 seconds for the final 600m.
Bowen was delighted her four-year-old gelding rediscovered his winning form.
“He’s been a handful from the start,” she said.
“When Jeff Penza won on him at Muswellbrook first up he looked like he could have been anything.
“Then we found he was a roarer and he had the tie-back.”
She said the operation wasn’t a 100 per cent result but hopes he might continue his rise up the grades because he is a big and strong individual still with plenty of potential.
