More than 2000 sites across Australia participated in last year’s event.
And, on Friday, March 1, Muswellbrook High School, Muswellbrook South Public School, Muswellbrook Girl Guides, Muswellbrook and Denman Scouts, Denman Children’s Centre, St James’ Primary School and Goodstart Early Learning Centre will roll up their sleeves to make a difference in the shire.
“We’re devoted to educating the community on the importance of a sustainable world,” St James’ Primary School principal Aaron Moon said.
It’s a sentiment shared by Erin Butler, from the Denman Children’s Centre, which has developed a sustainability initiative.
“Part of this program will see the centre participate in the Schools Clean Up Australia Day on March 1,” she said.
“Educators will discuss the importance of cleaning up rubbish and reiterate the message that we aim to reduce, reuse, refuse and recycle trash.
“Also, staff and children will be cleaning up Lions Park adjacent to our centre.”
Muswellbrook Shire Council’s sustainability officer Tracy Ward said even young children knew that littering or illegal dumping was not acceptable.
“It is wonderful to see a variety of groups getting involved in the school day,” she admitted.
“Clean Up Australia Day is not just about cleaning up on one day but also about demonstrating that there are local people who care about their environment.
“This year’s events are being run in conjunction with the Don’t Be a Tosser anti-littering campaign.
“It encourages residents to report a ‘tosser’ online by searching ‘Don’t be a Tosser’.”
Don’t Be a Tosser is an initiative of the Environmental Protection Authority’s Waste Less Recycle More program.
The community is also invited to participate in Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 3, at:
* Muswellbrook – Wilkinson Avenue, opposite Croquet Club – 9am to noon
* Denman – Name Path, Merino Street – 9am to noon
