The Muswellbrook Girls Academy (MGA) celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD) with a morning tea and an interesting discussion about the ongoing campaign for gender equality.
Family and community stakeholders were welcomed and new MGA students personally invited female teachers and staff to attend.
The pupils hosted the event and spoke on the significance of this year’s international subject, Balance For Better.
The Australian theme for IWD 2019 was More Powerful Together, recognising the importance of working in collaboration to create a world where women and girls everywhere have equal rights and opportunities, something that goes to the heart of the Girls Academy mission to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander females.
The Girls Academy is Australia’s leading in-school program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and has operated at Muswellbrook High School since the start of 2017.
Local program manager Elizabeth Howard asked students to speak about the female teachers who inspire them the most.
More than 50 people attended the event, which also featured activities such as rock art and creating role model booklets.
