Young Lachy Hamilton will present his debut album Alchemy at the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music in Muswellbrook on Saturday, March 23, at 8pm as part of his East Coast tour.
Inspired by Paulo Coelho's novel The Alchemist, Alchemy features some of Australia's finest young musicians with Thomas Avgenicos on trumpet, Matt Harris on piano, Harry Morrison on bass and Patrick Danao on drums.
Hamilton's five original compositions in Alchemy: The Crystal Merchant; Fatima - Woman of the Desert; Urim and Thummim; The Wind, The Sun and the Hand of God, and title track The Alchemist are based on the novel's characters and theme of following your heart and dreams.
He says the musicians work together to mirror the novel's characters and their motives.
"Saxophone and piano solos in Fatima - Woman of the Desert are the tantalising voices of lovers Santiago and Fatima," Hamilton said.
"The smooth heartbeat of the composition emanates from Patrick Danao's calming drum beat providing a clear canvas for improvisation.
"In contrast, The Crystal Merchant's fiery horn melody is interrupted by the fraught conversations between trumpet and saxophone solos in improvisations retelling of the merchant's struggles."
As a counterpoint, the album concludes with two of Hamilton's favourite jazz standards, Body and Soul by Johnny Green and Pent-Up House by Sonny Rollins which, he says, tie the album together "perfectly".
He is part of the new wave of jazz musicians to hit the Australian music scene.
The Sydney-based saxophonist recently returned from New York and now plays with Judy Bailey's Jazz Connection (lead alto), Lime Cordiale, Kwame, as a sideman for various jazz groups, as well as his self-titled Lachy Hamilton Trio, Quartet and Quintet ensembles.
His musical journey has taken him around the world performing with the likes of James Morrison, Don Burrows, Kate Ceberano, James Muller, Sarah McKenzie, Patti Austin, The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and many more.
He's played in well-known establishments including Sydney's Basement, Melbourne's Paris Cat, Chicago's Green Mill and New York's Dizzy's Coca-Cola Club.
Hamilton's Alchemy tour includes Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Newcastle as well as regional NSW and Queensland.
