About 3.30am on Wednesday, September 13, it is alleged the 44-year-old forced open the front door of a home in Farnell Street, Forbes.
Once inside, the intruder allegedly struck a 71-year-old male occupant several times with an iron bar.
Once the iron bar was removed from the alleged attacker's grasp, he ran from the scene.
The injured man attended Forbes Hospital in a serious but stable condition, suffering head injuries.
Following an examination of the scene by officers from Central West Police District, Strike Force Buttsworth was established.
As a result of investigations, earlier on Friday, May 17, police arrested a man on Bridge Street, Muswellbrook.
He was taken to Muswellbrook Police Station and charged with special aggravated break and enter with intent to wound.
He was refused bail to appear at Wyong Local Court via video link on Saturday, May 18.
