To celebrate her 10th birthday, the Pacific Brook Christian School Year 4 student decided to get rid of her long locks - all in the name of a good cause.

And, despite a few obvious nerves, the young girl bravely faced the snip of scissors under the watch of experienced hairdresser Kristie Huggins.

With her fellow pupils cheering her on, and offering words of encouragement, Bella saw 35.5cm of hair fall to the ground.

As a result of her courage, she raised more than $1500 for Variety - the Children's Charity.

The donated tresses will now be sent to specialised wig-makers who make wigs for those who've lost their hair due to medical conditions, such as cancer or alopecia.

"Her father [Jeremiah] and I are very proud of Bella," mum Jess Dugan said.

"I think everyone in the school is as well.

"She saw an ad on television about kids with cancer.

"So, Bella wanted to do something to help them [for her birthday].

"I suggested Hair with Heart, for Variety - and our goal was $1000.

"We're delighted we exceeded that amount.

"Now, her [donated] hair will be made into wigs, which give those children in need more confidence and better self-esteem so they can feel like themselves again.

"We'd just like to thank all the local businesses for their support."

The proceeds of the school's Pyjama Day, which also took place on Friday, will go towards Variety, too.
