EARLIER (3.40PM): THE New England Highway is closed in both directions while firies battle a grass fire near Ravensworth on Monday afternoon.
Emergency services, Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews, and Hunter Valley Police District officers were called to the scene - between Liddell Station Road and the Old New England Highway - at 2.45pm.
It's believed the fire is located in the Liddell Power Station site, but has moved within 30m of the highway.
"At the moment, it's being contained by the RFS and nearby mining personnel," Hunter Valley Police District Sergeant Ryan Froml said.
"But, we're asking people to avoid the area.
"Diversions are currently being implemented, too.
"It's not suitable for B-double trucks, which are being parked up.
"Heavy vehicles can use the Golden Highway or Denman Road instead.
"Motorists are also being urged to allow extra travel time, exercise caution or find an alternative route."
