That's why the Muswellbrook Drought Buster Charity Rodeo has decided their competition this year will be free of charge, allowing local enthusiasts to get their fix without having to rush to the ATM.

While not everything will be without cost, the chance to get along and watch some of the best bull riders in the state battle it out will be, making it an enticing option for a Saturday activity.

It will be a full rodeo program, with competitors partaking in events such as junior and open bulls, barrels and poddy rides.

President Brad Singleton, who has helped run it for over 20 years now and is a former rider himself, said he's looking forward to the event, especially given the cause and since it has only been able to run once in the past three years.

"Everyone is affected by the drought, especially in the rural area which we're from around here...and I see how the farmers struggle and so forth," he said.

"We [the committee] just thought it was fitting to try and do something appropriate.

"Three years ago we actually got washed out - that almost seems like the last time it rained - and we had to pull the pin, then last year it was really dry and we had no sponsorship or helping hands so we had to pull the pin again."

This year however, small and large local businesses have gotten on board with the likes of Malabar Coal, Mach Engergy, Bengalla, Mangoola, BHP, Muswellbrook RSL and Thiess jumping in with support.

Food and drinks, market stalls and children events will be available on the day too, although some of those will have a small cost connected to them.

Newcastle band Unit 20 will also be making the trip to Muswellbrook to provide entertainment to patrons.

Mr Singleton was keen to thank those around the town for their ongoing backing of the rodeo.

"It's great to see the support of the local businesses and people who get behind us and help us out with sponsorship," he said.

"It's good to see the community spirit, everyone is getting behind us and we're really excited about a great weekend."

The event takes place on Saturday, October 19 at the Muswellbrook Showground, with gates opening at 9 am.
