Trevor and Pam Anspach received the Prettiest Garden of the Year award on Tuesday, October 15, and were thrilled to be rewarded for their work and smart planning.
"It's great to be selected, it was unexpected though," Mr Anspach said.
The 66-year-old has been working on the garden since he and his wife bought the house back in 1987, and said it just takes consistency and persistence to make it look as good as it does.
"It's just a bit each day I suppose, as long as you keep the weeds down," he explained.
"It's changed over the years, sometimes you get sick of a plant then pull it out and put another one in, it changes a few times a year."
Muswellbrook Lioness Club first vice-president Meegan Van Der Vliet said there were a number of factors that made them choose the Anspach's garden.
"This year with the drought it's had a huge impact on the whole community," she added.
"However, in this garden you can actually see the drought-tolerant plants, which has assisted in bringing the colour to the property."
While the garden is well taken care of, Mr Anspach said he believed it was equally beneficial sometimes.
"It's good, now that I'm retired it's nice to spend some time out there," he summed up.
