The Tamworth-bound Shameem's Haulage Pty Ltd employee quickly shifted his truck away from the station when the cabin caught fire while fuelling before he managed to escape the blaze.

"The driver did the right thing," Singleton 444 Fire and Rescue team member Chris Taylor said.

"He got out while getting fuel and noticed that the cabin was on fire so he attempted to move the truck forward for the safety of the station."

Fire crews from Singleton and Branxton (code two - not required) were initially called out at 9.15am and attended the scene five minutes later.

The Indian-born truck driver, who has called Australia home since 2006, was able to retrieve his mobile phone, wallet and lunch box moments after shifting the engulfed truck towards the parking area.

"When I wake up in the morning, I wake up with a positive attitude so you don't know that this s-t is going to happen," the 31-year-old explained.

"I do the steel work from Sydney to Tamworth and I stop here in Singleton to fill up.

"I jumped out of the truck to fill it up and then straight away I saw the truck had caught on fire.

"I started up the truck and tried my best to get it into the parking bay but in the meantime the fire just kept on spreading so there wasn't a lot of time.

"So I called 000 and they came and controlled the incident."

The service station has reopened for customers however the truck bay will not be opened until lunchtime.
