Stoinis enjoyed a meteoric rise last summer - to the point where he was considered the country's top all-rounder and was called up ahead of Mitch Marsh for the second Test against Sri Lanka in January - although he ultimately didn't feature.

But the all-rounder hasn't been involved in any format of international cricket since battling through side strains - and poor form - at the World Cup.

Australia will name any changes to their Boxing Day Test squad on Tuesday but Stoinis doesn't appear to be in the frame to face New Zealand, despite Australia favouring an all-rounder at the MCG in recent years.

"We (coach Justin Langer and I) haven't chatted recently about that (Test selection) - but 100 per cent, Test cricket's still my goal - that's where I want to play," Stoinis said on Monday.

"I played a lot of Shield cricket this year - the most I've played for probably three or four seasons. And it's good to remember how to block the ball and spend some time out in the middle."

Despite admitting pushing through injury at the World Cup had potentially set him back, Stoinis said he didn't regret putting his hand up to play.

"It's probably one I've thought about; whether I should have pulled myself out or tried to play, but at the end of the day you're playing at a World Cup and I would have run through a wall to keep going," he said.

"So, it might've not helped me in the long run. But to be fair, I wouldn't change anything."

Stoinis said he hoped to work his way back into the fold by backing up red-ball performances for Western Australia with runs and wickets in the BBL for the Melbourne Stars.

"I guess so (I've got a point to prove). I guess the only way to put yourself back in the Aussie team is by doing well at state level - whether that's Big Bash or state cricket, so selection will look after itself," he said.
