For those who panic bought or stocked up on food that quickly goes out of date, an addition purchase was then required: freezers.
In fact, the demand for freezers became so high that many stores across the state sold out of the accessory, including Muswellbrook's own Betta Electrical.
Guy Nichols, who owns the business alongside his wife Tanya, has revealed the extent of the product's need during the peak of the panic buying saga.
"We've been here 20 years and we haven't seen anything like this," he said.
"All freezers, every size, every manufacturer is out of stock until around the end of May or start of June.
"We even had people from Singleton, Maitland and Newcastle ringing us up and coming and grabbing what we had in stock because there's just nothing anywhere."
It's not the only product people are rushing to get their hands on though, with refrigerators, washing machines, televisions selling quickly.
Smaller items that could be needed in long-term isolation have also been popular as bread makers, cryovac and food-saver machines, hair-cutting kits and beard trimmers have flown off the shelves at an advanced rate.
While this is currently good news for Mr Nichols, he acknowledges it won't last forever and is preparing for more difficult times in the future.
"We've been very busy over the past thee or four weeks but we're fully aware it's only short term and it will get quieter in the future due to the flow on effects from businesses around town that have to close," he said.
He emphasised the point that locals have to group together and help each other get through the tough times that are sure to come as the COVID-19 restrictions continue.
Betta Electrical will also be doing "no contact" deliveries of their products and are hoping to be able to provide all required accessories to locals in need.
