Member for Upper Hunter Michael Johnsen said traffic lights with pedestrian crossings would be installed on each leg of the intersection to provide safer and easier access for pedestrians crossing the highway and Lorne Street.
"This project is part of us keeping everyone who uses our roads as safe as possible. One life lost is one too many," Mr Johnsen said.
"The work will include a new footpath and kerb ramps being installed to connect to the existing footpath, and improve access to the new traffic lights."
Work will also involve resurfacing the intersection and renewing line marking.
The upgraded intersection will include separated left-turning lanes into Lorne Street from both directions, which will require removing some parking on each side of the highway.
Work will start on Monday, May 25 and will be carried out between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Friday for eight weeks, weather permitting.
Some work will also be carried out between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday to minimise traffic impacts.
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the direction of signs and traffic control.
