THE Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is currently preparing to supersede three bridges in Muswellbrook for the purpose of improving its network reliability.
The massive venture, which began last month and expected to be completed by June 2022, involves the replacement of existing structures spanning Bridge Street, Muscle Creek and the Hunter River.
A 26m long single span concrete bridge is part of the plans for Bridge Street, while the Muscle Creek and Hunter River bridges are being replaced with a combined 175m long multi-span concrete bridge.
And, throughout August, the project team will complete the set-up of site facilities, as well as start construction work.
This includes installing sheet piles and a permanent retaining wall next to the footpath between Bridge Street and Wilkinson Avenue; and erection of piling and crane pads.
"In the upcoming rail shutdown, sheet piling will be undertaken near Bridge Street from August 4 to 6," an ARTC spokesperson said.
"We plan to work both day and night to reduce the length of disruption to the community and rail network.
"However, the out of hours labour will involve different types of equipment, which will generate temporary and intermittent noise.
"We understand this work can be an inconvenience and we'll take measures to reduce this where possible.
"But, it's vital to maintain the operation and safety of the rail line."
The planned works will also require occasional single lane road closures of Bridge Street underneath the existing rail bridges.
The current known dates and times are as follows:
- From 6.30pm on August 4 to 5am on August 5
- From 6.30pm on August 5 to 5am on August 6
- From 9.30am to 2.30pm on August 6
Signage and traffic control will be in place at all times during the single lane closure to safely allow pedestrian and vehicle movements.
During the September scheduled possession (September 22 to 24), the project team will begin the first of the foundation piling works for the new Bridge Street bridge.
At Muscle Creek and Hunter River, the focus is on the construction of a temporary access bridge over Muscle Creek and construction of the temporary casting yard.
Foundation piling works for both temporary structures will begin in mid-August, extending until mid-September.
The project team is expected to carry out track reconditioning works at the western end of the work site during the September scheduled possession.
