Andrew Henderson, Census executive director and national spokesperson, said recruiting part-time field officers from the communities in which they live was important.
"We can't do a Census without field officers. We need people from their communities who know the area, are comfortable getting out and about, on the ground," he said.
"It's a really great opportunity to help tell your community's story. Every community is different and every one of those communities has changed in the past five years.
"The people working the Upper Hunter will go out to rural properties, making sure people living on farms, camping grounds and caravan parks get their Census. We need to get to everyone and we need to be able to follow up with everyone afterwards."
The Census, complete every five years, provides a comprehensive picture of Australia's population and housing. Data collected informs the ABS about the economic, social and cultural make-up of the nation. The 2021 Census will be held on Tuesday, August 10.
Mr Henderson said the ABS has eight Census field officer positions open in Muswellbrook, nine in Scone and 17 in Singleton.
Field officers assist the ABS by delivering Census instructions and forms, answering questions and visiting households that had not responded. The role is a short term, from July to September. No experience is required.
