The Muswellbrook Chronicle contacted Google after noticing the location discrepancy in mid-January which had affected estimated travel times and directions.
A spokesperson for Google said the issue had now been fixed but was unable to explain the cause behind the misplacement of Muswellbrook.
"We use multiple sources to accurately model the real world, including third party data, user contributions, along with Street View and satellite imagery," the Google spokesperson said.
"When there are inaccuracies, we work to fix them as quickly as possible."
The mapping error isn't the first to affect users of Google Maps in Australia.
In 2017, The Sydney Morning Herald reported hundreds of drivers who searched for directions to 'The Blue Mountains' on Google Maps ended up in Valley View Road in Dargan, nearly 30km north of the more famous Blue Mountains tourist attractions of Katoomba Falls and The Three Sisters.
More recently in April 2021, ABC News reported on the frustrations of several mayors of small outback towns in western Queensland who warned drivers to be wary of following Google Maps after reports of drivers in the region being suggested "bizarre" Google-suggested routes that strayed from major roads.
