A commuter filmed the moment water surged inside the ferry "Tollerort" on the Elbe River in Hamburg in northern Germany on Thursday, February 17.

Large waves, heavy rainfall and winds of up to 152 kilometres an hour were battering Hamburg at the time due to Storm Ylenia making its way through northern Germany.

A video of the incident circulating on social media, snapped by Sebastian Peters, showed at least 10 people were in the ferry when the wave broke through the glass windows and entered the cabin.

Four people sitting at the front of the ferry were completely engulfed by the white water when the wave hit, bearing the brunt of the force.

Meanwhile, others grabbed their belongings and ran to the back of the ferry as river water spread all across the floor.

Three people were injured as a result of the wave breaking through the glass, according to local broadcaster NDR.

Among them was a 32 year old who suffered cuts from the broken glass and was treated as an outpatient at hospital.

The ferry was run by local Hamburg public transport company HADAG.

HADAG Managing Director Tobias Haack told NDR: "It was an incident that we've never had before."

The ferry incident comes amid Storm Ylenia bringing gale force winds of up to 152km/h to northern Germany on Thursday morning.

Trains, buses, ferries and flights have been cancelled as a result of the wild weather, which also toppled trees and flooded markets.

So far, three people died in Germany and two more died in Poland as a result of the storm, according to the Associated Press.

Another storm named "Zeynep" is also expected to bring winds of up to 150km/h to northern Europe on Friday.
