The goalkeeper was selected to play for Northern NSW in their U12/13 team on a three-week Greece tour.
Playing in school-based futsal competitions in Maitland and Newcastle, as well as the Australian Schools Nationals competition in Victoria, is what scored him the selection.
Both Finn and his mother Annabelle are very grateful for the help received in the lead up to the trip.
“I’d like to thank the donators and sponsors for all their support,” Finn said.
“And I’d like to thank my mum and my family.”
“Finn was able to make the trip to Greece due to the generous support of the Muswellbrook community – specifically a very generous donation from the Muswellbrook RSL Club and sponsorship by the Muswellbrook Eagles Football Club and Osborn Transport,” his mother said.
McLoughlin’s goalkeeping coach Ben Kennedy from the Newcastle Jets was also of great assistance and gave him a signed Jets jersey to raffle.
The trip was full of great memories on and off the field, including Athens’ worst storms and flooding in more than 20 years.
McLoughlin’s team won, lost and drew, but the experience was in all cases a massive win.
“We versed the top team and only lost by 5-3,” McLoughlin said.
They learnt more about the game, as well as the unique Greek culture.
The 13-year-old was one of two goalkeepers and got the chance to play on the field as well and scored three goals.
It wasn’t all about sport though; the team also toured Acropolis, Olympia and Delphi, and enjoyed a day cruising through the Greek Islands.
He may be back from Greece now but that isn’t the end of futsal for Finn who has been selected for the Northern NSW under-14 team as one of two goalkeepers to play at the Australian Nationals in January in Sydney.
