The Cats were solid in their first outing against opponents who are expected to contend for the 2015 premiership.
An even first quarter saw the Cats trail by 11 points, but they were unable to match their more- fancied opponents in the next two terms.
They managed to kick just one goal during that period, but responded in the last quarter with a three-goal flurry.
Tate Barry, Adam Higham, Brian Martin and Mark McLaughlin were the best for the Cats, while Cameron Benkovic kicked three goals.
Goals: C. Benkovic 3, J. Williams 1, T. Barry 1.
Best: T. Barry, A. Higham, B. Martin, M. Mclaughlin, J. Pursell and J. Stojakovic.
Muswellbrook is at home again this weekend to 2014 grand finalists, Terrigal Avoca.
Their opponents had a convincing first round win over Maitland and they will certainly be a tough test for Muswellbrook.
The Cats will be looking for Barry and Martin to continue their round one form, while Benkovic will again be their main avenue to goal.
The match starts at Weeraman Field at 1pm.
