Club stalwart Ted Denton is confident Souths can continue their recent trend of starting the season strongly.
“Last year we only got beaten once in the first round and that was in the opening game; we dropped one bloke about 10 times and he went on to get a hundred and win the game for them,” he said.
“But other than that, we hope to start strongly again and let everyone know that we’re around.
“I think we’ll go well this year; as far as I’m concerned, we were one of the best teams in the competition last season.
“We just let ourselves down a bit towards the end; a lot of the time we had games won and then lost them playing ridiculous shots.
“I still maintain that we can go out and win the competition, but I think it’ll be really strong again.”
Both Muswellbrook-based clubs reached the semi-finals of the 40-over tournament last season, with RSL advancing to the decider.
However, they went down to a dominant Valley outfit by 72 runs.
The only clash between the two Muswellbrook clubs in last year’s competition saw RSL defeat Souths by 56.
This weekend’s action starts at 1pm at Olympic Park.
Meanwhile, in other second grade matches, Denman takes on Creeks at Denman No.1 Oval while PCH play Glendon at Cook Park 1.
Defending premiers Valley’s first test comes against JPC at Cook Park 4.
