The local organisation has adopted the Aussie Hoops program, in a bid to lift numbers and the participation rate of the round ball game.
“It was launched by Basketball Australia, on a national level, and it’s the first time we’ve had it in town,” Muswellbrook Basketball Association (MBA) secretary Veronica Huggins said.
“And, we’re lucky to have people like Neil Pollard and Kira Roberts running it at the Muswellbrook Indoor Sports Centre.
“Children involved in Aussie Hoops receive a bag, basketball and a reversible shirt.
“The cost for the term is $50 per child.
“At the moment, we’ve got between 30 and 40 juniors taking part – they’re learning skills and the basics, and getting put into a game each week.
“But, anyone can turn up to the stadium between 4.45pm and 6pm each Tuesday.
“We also have a senior competition later that night.
Thankfully, Ravensworth Open Cut mine also saw merit in the program and stepped in to lend some financial clout.
“They sponsored us to the tune of $2000,” Huggins said.
“That backing will encourage junior involvement in the sport – and provide the kids with a pathway to play senior basketball.
“I’d like to thank them for their support.”
Huggins believes the upcoming Rio Games could prove a windfall for the MBA, too.
“The profile of basketball will lift, courtesy of the Olympics,” she said.

“And, it usually has a positive impact on a local level.
“We’re a little association, but the only town in the region which boasts men’s and women’s competitions.
“I think we’re in good shape.”
