The four year programme includes hands-on experience at the open cut coal mine and a technical study period at Hunter Institute Muswellbrook Mining Industry Skills Centre.
First year MIGAS apprentice Matthew Dunn, having recently completed six months at the Mining Skills Centre, is encouraging others to apply for the apprenticeship opportunities on offer with Bengalla.
Matthew said, “For young people thinking about an apprenticeship, it is definitely worth applying. If you are interested and willing to work hard, it is a great opportunity for anyone.
“I wanted to pursue a career in trades because I have always been interested in engines and how things are put together to make the machine work efficiently.
“I am in my first year of my apprenticeship and am learning all the time. One of the best aspects of the apprenticeship is being able to meet new people with the same interests as me and who are willing to help me further my knowledge.
“The people at Bengalla are very friendly and it is great to work in a safe environment.
“I am enjoying working towards my goal of achieving a full-time role as a tradesperson after finishing my apprenticeship and I am also hoping to further my studies with an Engineering degree,” he said.
Matthew was also an Apprentice of the Year State Finalist in the 2016 MIGAS Excellence in Trades Awards.
Bengalla Chief Executive Officer, Cam Halfpenny said, “We are looking for self-motivated team players to fill the four available apprenticeship places and start their careers in mining with us at Bengalla.
“The programme offers apprentices the opportunity to work in a safe environment with experienced tradespeople across a broad range of electrical and plant mechanic functions.
“We provide ongoing coaching, mentoring and support from both MIGAS and Bengalla as the apprentices work to obtain a nationally recognised qualification.
“The programme gives apprentices a great start in the mining industry and allows Bengalla to tap into a pool of talented workers and help build capacity in the Hunter Valley.”
The apprentices will be employed through group training employer MIGAS and will join 12 other apprentices at Bengalla.
MIGAS Field Officer and apprenticeship coordinator, Angela Gardner said, “We’re excited to gear up for the 2017 apprentice intake and are searching for young men and women who are as passionate and committed as Matthew.”
