INSPIRATIONAL women, empowerment and raising money for a service that helps the community’s most vulnerable residents is the theme of a luncheon open to all to attend this month.

Port Stephens Women in Business will hold its annual major fundraiser at Horizons Golf Resort on July 29.
Money raised from the luncheon, now in its sixth year, will go to the Yacaaba Centre.
“They are just a small group of counselors who don’t seem to get a lot of attention or the funding that they should,” Kylie Smiley, president of Port Stephens Women in Business said when asked why the group supports the Nelson Bay-based centre.
“We have a focus on women, specifically women from businesses in the local area.
“We want to do what we can to help women who find themselves homeless because they’re under attack in their own homes.”
Mrs Smiley said this point was also highlighted to attendees of its most recent meeting.
Louise Catlow, principal of LMC Lawyers in Nelson Bay, spoke about family violence at the meeting and encouraged people to attend the end of month fundraiser.
“People can take a long time to find the courage to leave an abusive relationship and when they do they can find great difficulty accessing any services such as housing, legal advice or counselling for themselves or their children; often finding themselves travelling an hour away into Newcastle despite having little or no money,” Ms Catlow said.
“The Yacaaba Centre do an amazing job at directing vulnerable people to the relevant services as well as their counselling service which is invaluable to someone who has been through hell.
“I would encourage people within our community to support the fundraising event in July in aid of helping the Yacaaba Centre continue to help people within our community.”
Running with the Women Empowering Women theme, luncheon attendees will hear from four of the region’s most influential women.
Port Stephens MP Kate Washington will speak, as will Mel Histon from the Got Your Back Sista charity.
Beauty and success coach Kim McGann and Tracey Friend, the corporate strategy and planning manager at Milskil will also speak at the luncheon.
The luncheon is not just for women or members of the business group – it is open to all.
It will be held in the sunset bar of the Salamander Bay golf resort from noon on July 29.
