On Saturday, a mini bus full of the new members of Muswellbrook Shire Council were introduced to the shire and its features from a local government perspective through a tour of the area’s facilities.
And, a day later, they were briefed on the legal and strategic role of council, from its strict Code of Conduct to participation in a mock council meeting in the afternoon to help everyone learn the meeting procedures.
As part of the introductory tour, councillors visited a number of public and council-provided sites including the Upper Hunter Tertiary Education Centre, Campbell’s Corner, Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre, the Sandy Hollow streetscape and water supply, the Denman Recreation Area, the Muswellbrook sewerage treatment plant and the animal shelter.
“I was absolutely blown away by the restoration and renovations to Campbell’s Corner and, especially, the Upper Hunter Conservatory of Music,” first-time councillor Michelle Green said.
“A seamless melding of old and new to create a space Muswellbrook should be deeply proud of.
“Over the weekend we got to know the general manager (Steve McDonald) and senior council staff members with each demonstrating their passion, knowledge and expertise in their various fields.
“I have a very steep learning curve ahead of me but I feel less over-whelmed and more confident, knowing I am part of a supportive, approachable and passionate team.”
