It’s mighty hard to understand that the winners of the Muswellbrook men’s competition was Gymnast, who had the jump on Long Jumpers in the grand final by a leaping margin.
In their wake were teams like Sprinters, Power Lifters, Pole Vaulters and Hurdlers – all names adopted by local sides for the recent Olympic Park tournament.
As pictured, the winners are grinners and they deserved every accolade.
Gymnast, captained by Dan Thorn who never lost a set, had the perfect example for a number one.
Thorn took out both the strike rate trophy for doubles and singles and his leadership washed over his team mates.
Chris Nixon, his number two, claimed a strike rate prize and Chris Hatherly snared similar honours in division 4.
Scott Collins, who held his position well as a number three, enjoyed a great welcome “back to tennis”.
At the presentation night last Thursday, members congratulated the winning team while other stand out players were acknowledged.
Russell Passfield, a real journeyman of tennis, returned to form and his strike rate as a number two showed this.
It was the efforts of Kieran Scott that drew applause in keeping this competition running smoothly.
The next men’s format will start on Thursday, October 27.
If you haven’t registered, then make sure you contact Kieran on 6542 5587 or Tony McTaggart on 6543 2788 to get involved.
It’s a great way to meet people and maintain some fitness.
The club hosts junior tennis coaching every Thursday and registration for this is just $40 for the whole school term.
Coaching starts from 5.30pm until 6.30pm – and it’s great to see some of the young players coming on.
Nick Walsh, a local junior, had his first hit out in the men’s competition and showed some great talent.
He was not overawed by the experience.
And, it’s done his tennis the world of good to get more competition under his belt.
Another youngster in Reuben O’Halloran seems to be flourishing in the senior ranks.
His tennis has also gone from strength-to-strength.
