While the Muswellbrook District Junior Rugby League Football Club will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in May, it won’t be their first event for the year.
Many in town would remember days spent at the old Bowman Park location, where families met for games and training, before moving to Olympic Park.
The club’s publicity officer Michelle Williams is inviting Muswellbrook residents to visit the old Bowman Park shed one final time to reminisce.
On Sunday, January 29, between 10am and 12pm, join other past and present club members, and relive the glory days one more time.
The shed is still home to a range of items which will delight those who love looking back on local history.
Enjoy a sausage sandwich as you browse the old location, before everything is moved to a different location for safekeeping.
Ms Williams said the shed is like a time capsule, showing a snapshot of the club’s past.
“There are coffee mugs just left on bench, and old coffee too,” she said.
While the artefacts wouldn’t return much money if sold, Ms Williams said they held a lot of sentimental value, including old team photos and trophies.
“From what I can gather, the land size was of four acres bordering both Lorne and Mitchell Street,” she said.
“The land was originally bought by Edward Bowman from a Mr Walter Shoults a builder from Surry Hills in Sydney for the sum of 852 pounds in October 1893 and named after the Mayor of the time.
“It appears that football stopped being played there around 1994 when the new Olympic Park precinct was built and our club transferred its games and training over to the current location.”
