The Muswellbrook High School student’s dedication to his CrossFit training resulted in qualification for the upcoming 2017 CrossFit Games.
“I did it for a school sport and then I started coming after school and I started to like it,” he said.
“I like the cardio, trying really hard, and having no energy left at the end.”
Jayk said he was a lot fitter than when he started at CrossFit Muswellbrook, and had a lot more motivation.
“I did the Open, which is a really famous CrossFit work out which every CrossFitter does,” he said.
“Then if you go well at that, you get to go to the next level, which is a qualifier.
“[If successful] you get to go to the CrossFit Games.
“If you win that, you have the title of Fittest in the World.”
There are a few divisions in the games – 14/15, which Jayk will compete in; 16/17; adults; and masters, for people 40 years and older.
While it is an international competition, Jayk is able to compete from the comfort of his home town, by submitting videos of his attempts.
“I don’t actually go away; I do it here,” he said.
“It’s four days and you’ve got to do a certain amount of workouts and then see how you go.
“Whoever does the best goes through.”
In preparation for the contest later this month, the 14-year-old trains five days a week.
He is grateful for the support of his CrossFit Muswellbrook coaches – Jay McTaggart and Nat Murphy – who guide him through his training.
Ms Murphy said the teenager had a passion, determination and drive to succeed in all he did.
“Jayk is one of our dedicated teens, who has a focus like I’ve never seen on a 14-year-old,” she said.
“We are super proud of what he has accomplished since starting his training with us.
“All the hard work has paid off and he’s now got a chance to fight for a spot on the world stage this year at the 2017 CrossFit Games.
“In the coming few weeks he will be putting it all on the line and gearing off with the Top 200 in the world for a spot in the games.”
Jayk is hoping to continue training and competing in CrossFit in the future.
