Following a narrow loss to the Southern Lakes Hammerheads last weekend, the Newcastle Hunter Rugby Union club is gearing up to host one of the biggest events on its calendar, Memorial Day.
The Heelers will face Griffins, from 3pm, for the Matt Kane Shield – a piece of silverware, which they’ve never relinquished.
“This is the ninth year we’ve contested the trophy,” Harry Hobden said.
“We’ve won the past eight times.
“And, we’re not about to let it go – the boys always step up.
“It’s an emotional occasion for the Heelers; and a chance to remember our players and members who have passed away.
“The club comes together for a massive day, which draws a big crowd.
“Everyone will lift for this match on Saturday.”
Muswellbrook skipper Cameron Young said he expected the weekend’s opponents to also rally for the encounter.
“They’ve got a link to the Kane family,” he told the Chronicle.
“Matt’s uncle played for Griffins.
“Even though it’s Memorial Day, both teams want to win.
“It will be a physical game.
“And, there’s plenty to play for.”
It won’t be all about rugby on the day either, according to Hobden.
“We’re going to make a donation to the Where There’s A Will Foundation,” he said.
“Male mental health is an issue for the club – and we’d like to assist the Upper Hunter-based organisation.
“We’ll have specially-designed jumpers, which will be auctioned off after the match.
“On top of that, ‘live’ music will provide entertainment into the night.
“Hopefully, plenty of locals, as well as past players and members, will head to Highbrook Park to cheer on the Heelers.”
