The McGrath Breast Care Nurses are based in Newcastle, and recently identified a need to bring their services to the Upper Hunter.
Ms Chenery said the pair would now visit Muswellbrook on the first Monday of every month.
“We found it’s a long distance for patients to travel to Newcastle for treatment so we will have a monthly clinic at the moment until we are a bit more established,” she said.
“Helen and I run a clinic at the Mater [hospital] and at Maitland.
“We’re now in the Upper Hunter just to make it easier for patients to access a Breast Care Nurse.”
Ms Chenery said there were a range of ways breast care nurses could help.
“We offer support for patients and their families, and we also provide education and information regarding treatments, wound treatment, and seroma management,” she said.
The nurses are there to support patients throughout the breast cancer process – from diagnosis, to end of life if need be.
Ms Moore’s position is funded by the Greater Building Society’s Greater Charitable Fund.
Ms Chenery said her role was funded by money given to the McGrath foundation from the Cricket Cares Pink Test.
“There are seven nurses around Australia funded by the Pink Test,” she said.
The next Muswellbrook clinic will be at the hospital on Monday, June 5, from 9am to 2pm.
The service is free and patients can be self-referred, or referred by a health professional.
