It sounds like the opening line of a gag but this story is no joke.
Three talented youngsters – five-eighth Cohen Shaw (Muswellbrook Public School), second-rower Ashton Blake (Denman Public School) and lock Brae Miller (Aberdeen Public School) – recently represented the Hunter under-11 zone team at the NSW Public School Sports Association (PSSA) Rugby League carnival in Sydney.
The trio played six games over three days, with their side claiming seventh spot in the finals.
Along the way, Hunter beat Western 12-6 and Sydney North 12-6, but suffered losses to Sydney West 20-12 and South Coast 10-6.
On the third day of the tournament, in the play-off for seventh and eighth, the locals scored a nail-biting 6-4 victory.
The boys, who hold ties to Group 21 clubs – the Muswellbrook Rams, Denman Devils and Aberdeen Tigers – found it a great experience with long-lasting mateships formed in the process.
