NSW Police said just after 9:30am on Tuesday police were called to the coal rail line at Ayrshire Crescent, Sandgate following reports a car was on the track.

Upon arriving, police said officers attached to Newcastle City Police District, with assistance from Police Rescue, spoke to a 24-year-old man inside the car who refused to leave as directed.

"Following inquiries, the man was arrested and taken to Waratah Police Station, where he was charged," NSW Police said in a statement.

Police said the man was charged with entering enclosed lands without a lawful excuse and causing obstruction to railway locomotives or rolling stock.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, November 2 2021.

A spokesperson for Australian Rail Track Corporation said the network had now resumed normal services.

"Following localised protest activity in the Newcastle area this morning train services were paused through the Kooragang area," the spokesperson said.

"Police and emergency services attended the site. The protestors have been moved on and the network has been assessed and deemed safe for normal resumption of services."

The protest follows a similar incident on Monday, November 8, where police removed climate activists from rail lines at Sandgate, near Newcastle.

Blockade Australia claimed responsibility for the protests on social media and said it was the third action aimed at disrupting the operations of the Newcastle coal port in two days.

"Australia is driving the climate crisis which is threatening all life on Earth and further deepening the crises caused by social systems of domination and oppression," Blockade Australia said on Facebook.

"The only way to stop these interlocking crises is to get in the way of the systems that drive them.

"Organised nonviolent blockading tactics are necessary to cause disruption to Australia's extractive operations and create the change required."

Blockade Australia named the man who disrupted the rail line on Tuesday morning as Jarrah.

"The Australian system is responsible for catastrophic destruction, not just locally, but globally," Blockade Australia quoted Jarrah as saying.

"The continued exploitation of people and resources of this continent will cause irreversible damage to ecological and social systems, which is why direct action is so necessary in the current crisis."
